“Howe & Fitzwilliam” company was first formed in Christchurch in 1957. Primarily an electrical contracting firm, the company soon earned a reputation for involvement with some large-scale local projects including:

By 1980 the firm had expanded its design and development arm and changed its name to R.A. Fitzwiliam & Co.
Carrying out electrical contracting in new areas such as printing, bottling, food manufacturing and plastics.
As industry needs developing, the company formed Southern Technology Ltd in 1988, a second entity to specialise in industrial electronics and telecommunications. In 1991 the parent company changed its name to Fitzwilliam Electrical.
